The Patriot Act that passed immediately after the 9-11 terrorist attacks was supposed to make Americans safer. There’s not much evidence that it did but there is a lot of evidence that it made them less secure from the prying eyes and ears of the state. Canada chose a similar path after the Parliament Hill attacks in 2014. Both countries should change course, writes Danielle Hartung, because the threat to privacy and civil liberties now outweighs the threat of terror.
